History

History

  • What is known today as the municipality of Gen. Nakar was a little more than half a century ago, just in the nearly inaccessible M.H. Del Pilar District (commonly known then as Distrito Pelagio) of the municipality of Infanta, Tayabas. It was only through the concerted efforts and incessant entreaty of the localfolk that the late President Elpidio Quirino finally issued Executive Order No. 246 separating Distrito Pelagio from its mother municipality of Infanta on July 21, 1949. The newly created town was named Gen. Nakar in memory of the heroic war exploits of the late Gen. Guillermo Peamante Nakar, a World War II military officer who hailed from Barrio Anoling, Distrito San Sebastian, Infanta, Tayabas (now Brgy. Anoling, Gen. Nakar, Quezon).
  • At the time of its creation, the municipality had only eight barrios, namely Anoling, Pamplona, Batangan, Catablingan, Magsikap, Maligaya, Minahan, and Banglos. It was in Pamplona that the seat of government was initially established.
  • In mid-1954, Pamplona was divided into two, and barangay Poblacion came into existence. Shortly thereafter, a plebiscite was held, transferring the seat of the municipal government to the newly-created central barrio. A year later, two other major barangays were likewise subdivided into smaller geographical entities, an initiative that eventually led to the creation of four new political units. Magsikap gave birth to what is known today as San Marcelino. And the subsequent oversized Maligaya paved the way for the advent of three new villages, namely Sablang and Canaway. All these political developments eventually brought the number of officially registered barangays in the municipality to thirteen.
  • In the mid-1960s, the bulky barangay of Batangan in the south was likewise made to disintegrate, which, in the final progression, led to the formation of five new upstream barrios: Mahabang Lalim, Maigang, Pagsangahan, Pisa, and Lumutan. Going downstream a bit, Barangay Minahan Sur and Barangay Minahan Norte appear on the municipal map as two new-fashioned independent barangays.
  • All these political twists finally brought the total number of brangays now uprising the municipality to nineteen. Summing this up, they are as follows: Anoling, Banglos, Batangan, Canaway, Catablingan, Lumutan, Magsikap, Mahabang Lalim, Maigang, Maligaya, Minahan Norte, Minahan Sur, Pamplona, Pagsangahan, Pisa, Poblacion, Sablang, San Marcelino, and Umiray. Some eighty-two far-flung sitios now comprise all these above-stated rural barrios.
